What technology would you be better off without, why?

I really do enjoy the questions. I’m making it a new year’s goal to grow my readership by answering more of these questions. I used to love the use of technology. I remember when everyone started to have access to GPS on their cell phone. I remember how relieved I felt to have an accurate little device. It would guide me on each turn. I always got to my destination without stress or fuss. Pre GPS I was always stressing out about getting lost. I’ve historically never been a great navigator. Although in middle school I loved geography class and learning how to read maps ironically.
The use of tech is growing and growing into our daily lives. I’ve personally gone from enchanted by it to just disgusted by it. No I don’t need AI in my computer, my tv, and on my Spotify playlist. Sometimes, I think we just need to rewind and return to the year 1995. Or perhaps revisit the sweet spot of the 2000’s. We had enough tech to get around and enjoy our lives. However, we weren’t so plugged in- Our attention spans had not completely left us.
I guess this is me showing my age here as a thirty six year old millennial. But, I’ve seen how social media apps like TicTok have ruined my ability to sit still and hold a conversation. Besides gaining clients, social media apps have not really benefited my life significantly. They haven’t brought any life changing impact. Conversations have stayed with me. These include those with people I’ve met while working public service jobs and doing tarot readings for individuals.
In the new year and for the rest of this one, I’m trying to rewire my brain. I aim to focus my attention span for longer periods of time and engage in hobbies that are more analog. I fear though that people will make “going analog” a trend. It is not something they actually do for joy. Instead, it could become something they do in the ever-evolving ecosystem to be heard and seen. Time will tell. However, if I were to truly answer this question, it would be “those damn smart phones.” It didn’t actually make us more intelligent after all, it just made us gullible sheep.
As a society, we are witnessing these changes in real time. More and more data centers are being built. In classrooms, children are unable to read, highlighting the literacy crisis. Critical thinking skills are being crippled, and our agriculture is suffering. Even as I write this blog post, WordPress’s AI writing tool provides suggestions. It tells me to use words that are “more simple and direct” for my writing. I believe my readers are more intelligent then that.
